News Update

Hi all,

first of all, congratulations to our Shark Swimmers over the weekend!  National records, personal bests, meet records ... and trophies and medals to boot!  Nice job everyone.  And thanks Coach Jamie!

APRIL SCHEDULE

There will be a bit of juggling in April.  Coach Jamie will be gone during the weeks of April 9th and 16th.  
Coach Tom will be gone for the week of April 9th
Coach Clare will be gone for the weeks of April 2nd and April 9th.

Coach David, Coach Zoe, Coach Laura and Coach Bailey will be filling in.  you all are in good hands.  

Beginner Competitive (Coach Tom's class) will be running the smae schedule through the month of April.  Get your kids out to swim over the break!

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH EASTER VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
For anyone interested, my church is having a one day Vacation Bible School on Saturday April 7th from 9 AM to 12 Noon.  The children will learn the Easter story, do a music station, craft station and an activity station.  We will be having it at the Vide Boutellie Secondary School in La Clery.  If anyone is interested, email me or call at 287-7260.  Admission is free.

T Shirts & Caps

ATTENTION ALL SHARKS PARENTS AND SWIMMERS:

We are in the process of organizing a new TEAM T-SHIRT for the year for all Sharks Swim Club Members. The cost per T-shirt will be $25 and like the last one, we assure you we will come up with something FUN-ky. (As you can see, this is why Tom usually writes these emails, cause he's actually funny).

In addition, we still have SHARKS Swim Caps left over from our last order and they are in brand new condition. The caps are durable black silicon material with the SHARKS Logo in white on each side and they look great on our swimmers at meets and practices. The caps also run $25 and there are only 20 left, so please respond to this email if your swimmer is interested, or come prepared to purchase one at our next swimmeet on Sunday, MARCH 18th.

We highly recommend that everyone buys a T SHIRT as we would like ALL of our swimmers dressed up in our New Team Gear ready to participate or come cheer on their teammates at the RHAC Invititational Swimmeet at the end of MARCH. We have many new members who have joined this year, and some returning members, so we would like to take a new team picture to update our website with our old and new faces.

National Sports Awards 2011

Saturday 18th at the Gaiety on Rodney Bay saw the National Sports awards ceremony.

Four of our nominees reached the final stage.

Jordan Augier is the Junior Sportsman of the Year

Siona Huxley is the now 5 time Junior Sportswoman of the Year

Pitons Challenge

Please be advised that the Southern Flying Fish Swim Club has decided to postpone the Pitons Open Water Swim. The proposed date is Sunday March 25th.

Also, coming up on the Calendar this month:

1) Go the Distance Swimmeet - Sunday February 26th 

Our SHARKS Coaches continue to work on improving the technique of all our swimmers, as well as introducing the importance of a positive attitude and setting SMART goals.

We are encouraging all of our swimmers to challenge themselves to compete in a race they have never done at the GO THIS DISTANCE meet, as many of them can now complete 4, 8 and even 16 laps of Freestyle with more ease due to their improvement in technique and their understanding of being more efficient in the water. Please encourage your kid(s) to come and support their team as swimmers and as spectators if you or your swimmer decides to sit this meet out.

2) MOVIE NIGHT at the Spiegelbergs (in Rodney Heights)

We are still finalizing details, but this is a tentative notice to leave Tuesday 21st of February open on your calendar. Further details will be sent out in respect to the time of the event as well as organizing a pot luck for a small feast for our swimmers, coaches and parents.

Shark Pride: How our kids did at the SLASA Awards on Saturday night...
In our coaches meeting on Saturday, Coach Jamie reminded us of our goals as a club.  Several of those goals include teaching kids to swim fast, building character through sports, and providing the best run swim club in St. Lucia.  Saturday night was the annual St Lucia Amateur Swimming Association Award night.  Awards are not our goal.  But when given out, they can be a good measure of if we are accomplishing our goals.  We competed well internationally, regional and locally.  Although there are those who are critical of our teaching style, the fact that we won half of the stroke awards shows that it is working.  And most importantly, we have children in our club who are conscientious and courteous.   We have a lot to be proud of in our club. Some of the accomplishments from the last year of swimming include...

-Coach Jamie received the COACH OF THE YEAR Award!  
-Over one third of the swimmers on the National team were SHARKS swimmers
-7 out of 8 of the St Lucian swimmers competing regionally at the CARIFTA swim meet were SHARK swimmers including the only medal winner from St Lucia - Siona Huxley.
-Of the 10 individual stroke awards, five were SHARK swimmers and 5 were from the other 5 clubs.
-Of the age group awards, five were SHARK swimmers and 7 were from the other five clubs.
-Jordan Augier received the Male Swimmer of the Year
-Siona Huxley received the Female Swimmer of the Year
-Runako Daniel received the Junior Male Swimmer of the Year

Congratulations to everyone who worked hard this year.  And good job coaching.  Why not show your thanks to your coach this year by giving them a thank you next time you see them. 

-Swimming Tip... Eating before practice.Everyone is hungry after school.  Parents... please be conscious of what your child is eating before swim practice!  Cheesy snacks and heavy bread is not a good idea just before going in the water.  The sugar found in soft drinks and fruit juices gives them a quick burst of energy, but they pay for it later.  Stick to fruits and vegetables.  pack it the night before if you have to.  Water is the best source of liquid.  Be smart!  And if the canteen is only selling junk, put the pressure on to get something good for the kids.

Thank you to everyone who has paid their January dues.  If you have not paid for January, YOU ARE LATE.  Pay or face the consequences. February fees are due Wednesday.  Jamie can't invite someone special to the movies if he doesn't have money.  he doesn't get money if John Bruce (our president) doesn't write him a check.  John Bruce can't write him a check if there is no money in our account.  There will be no money in our account if parents don't pay on time. For the sake of Jamie's social life, please pay on time.
