SWIMATHON 2010 IN AID OF VICTIMS OF HURRICANE TOMAS
The SHARKS Swim Club invites the general public to support the 2010 SWIMATHON in aid of VICTIMS OF HURRICANE TOMAS, to be held on Saturday 4th December at the Rodney Heights Aquatics Center.
Last year the Swimmers raised over $8,000 in aid of Dainelle Gaston, a 15 year old boy needing heart surgery. The swimmers so enjoyed the opportunity to swim for charity that this year initially decided to swim for children with cancer.
Unfortunately, the passage of Hurricane Tomas brought a lot of devastation to Saint Lucia and now the Swimmers are committed to raising funds for the victims of Tomas, by participating in the Swimathon to be held in two weeks time.
Members of the public are asked to pledge $1 for every 25m lap of the pool that is swam by the participant in the Swimathon. Schools are encouraged get their students to get involved. Cheques may be made payable to the “SHARKS Swim Club – for victims of Tomas”
Business Houses are also encouraged to participate by pledging $10 for every lap swam by their employee in the Swimathon.
For further information, please contact any Club swimmer or visit the SHARKS Swim Club website at www.sharkswimclub.info or telephone Secretary Tom Speigelberg on 287 7260.
Sincerely
John Bruce

Pool Reopening
Hello all,
Dr Worrell has informed us that the pool will be open. She has plenty of rainwater and chlorine for swimming!
We will plan a regular schedule next week.
Also, here is a note from Dr. Day about treating your rainwater.
"Its important to all strain rain water. Use a double layer of tight woven cotton to strain the water. Bacteria clings and hides in particulates
so u need to remove the particulates for the chlorination to be effective."
God bless,
Coach Tom

Saint Lucia Team at the CWG, Dehli
Saint Lucia's team for the Commonwealth Games arrived in Delhi on the morning of Thursday 30th September, and was honoured with a formal welcome to the Commonwealth Games Athlete Village that same evening. Five teams were officially welcomed at this ceremony, Bermuda, Guernsey, Jamaica, Uganda and St. Lucia.
The ceremony opened with cultural dancers performing a number of routines, before St. Lucia's Chef de Mission, Teddy Matthews, was called up onto the stage at the Village auditorium to be formally welcomed by the Village Mayor. Mr. Matthews was presented with a miniature of the Commonwealth Games Baton, that was carried through all countries of the Commonwealth, including St. Lucia in March. Mr. Matthews in turn presented the Mayor with a carved wooden plaque of the Pitons, and gave a short and gracious address. The St. Lucian flag was then raised, and the National Anthem played.
More dancing followed, and a guest appearance was made by the Games mascot, Shera, who joined the St. Lucia team for a group photograph. Commonwealth Games Federation Caribbean Vice-President, Fortuna Belrose, was amongst the many VIP's who joined the welcome ceremony.
Team members now have two days of preparation before the official opening ceremony on Sunday, with the first sporting events beginning on Monday.
This is the press release from the CWG.
Danni had not arrived at this point. (Top Photo)

Newsletter Name
Hi All,
We are going to put a newsletter together to be published every few months, outlining what the club has been up to and will be up to.
We need a creative name for this, so far Jamie has suggested "Reef Talk" and "Shark Bait", we would welcome your thoughts and ideas, not just for the name but also content. Just talk, or e-mail, to Jamie and Tom, or any other member of the Executive, to let us know. You can also use the little "Skribit" box on the blog for this, or any other ideas you have.

Sharks T-Shirt Tie Die Saturday September 24th - I need sizes!
Hello all,
hopefully most of you ahve recieved our booklet of information for the year and a piece of paper to sign and give back to the coaches. If you didn't get one, talk to your child (who should have given it to you) or one of the coaches.
One of the things we are doing this year is getting ready for our swim meets by getting our t-shirs in order. This year, since we didn't do much fundraising last year, we are asking everyone to purchase a new Sharks t-shirt. We are going to order white t-shirts and tye die them red, orange and yellow in time for our first big swim meet in October.
The cost is 15.00 for club swimmers and 25.00 for everyone else.
On Satuday September 24th at 1:00 PM (time subject to change, but for now...) we are asking everyone to meet at my house Coach Tom, in Rodney Heights to tye die the shirts.
Here is what we need:
- Old clothes that can get stained!
- 5 gallon buckets
- Parents to accompany your children. No drop offs please.
- Responsible older swimmers to help coordinate.
- Bring a drink to pass
- Bring a snack to pass.
- Bring your 15 or 25 for the t-shirts
- Bring whatever other white clothing you want to tye die.
We will be providing the dye, rubber bands and the venue.
We will be ordering the shirts on Monday, so if you haven't gotten me your size, please do so.
If you are not able to attend, don't worry. you can either tye die the shirt on your own or we will tye die it for you.
Here is a list of swimmers of whose sizes I do not yet have.

Assistant Coaching Training
Hello all,
At our last AGM meeting, we voted to increase fees this year with one purpose in mind. We need to train more assistant coaches. Since there are no regular training programs on the island, and to ensure a competent coaching staff year after year, we have decided to run our own coaching training sessions.
We are asking for anyone interested to let us know. The training sessions will be free. The club will be picking up the fees.
The sessions will run once a month on a Saturday from 9:30 - 11:00 AM for in the water training. It will also run one Thursday night a month from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM for film and book training.
The training sessions are open to anyone 16 or older, swimmers or parents.
The intent of the training sessions will be to train our older swimmers or parents to help on the deck during training sessions and prepare our coaches to assist during swim meets. The Club offers assistant coaches $20.00 per training session.
The first training session is Saturday September 25th, at 9:30 AM.
Thanks,
Coach Tom

Short Axis Swim Meet
Hello all,
For all of you who didn't know about the swim meet tomorrow, don't worry. That means you are not swimming.
Tomorrow afternoon there is a short axis developmental swim meet. For those of you who are swimming, Coach Jamie has already contacted you. If anyone else wants to show up and cheer our team on, please do so. You can find more information at the St Lucia Amateur Swimming Association website, aptly named www.slasa.info.
BUT... Coach Jamie is setting up a booth to sell off swimming paraphernalia to raise funds for our coaching staff uniforms. We are asking that anyone who can, please drop off a baked item that can be sold to add to our booth on Sunday.
Thanks!

Sharks Compete at Summer Splash 2010
Last weekend the Sharks competed at the annual Summer Splash at the Rodney Heights Aquatic Centre on August 26th-28th. For those who haven't been training over the summer, it was a good chance to get back into the season. For those who have been training, it was a great opportunity to set their time to beat for the upcoming year. We had many personal bests. In spite of four swimmers out due to illness or injury, four no show swimmers, and two of our top swimmers away at the Youth Olympic Games, we still pulled of a decisive second place finish. Nice job swimmers!

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games got off to a dazzling start on Saturday night, with the city's skyline providing a magnificent backdrop to a rousing opening ceremony, dedicated to the more than 3,500 athletes in attendance from all corners of the world.
The 27,000 people at Marina Bay were treated to a two-hour show that showcased Singapore's rich history and celebrated the cultural diversity of the country's indigenous people and the young Olympians, aged 14 to 18, who will compete in the Games' 26 events.
The inaugural competition is designed to be a stepping-stone for young athletes striving to compete at the Summer Olympics. And while sport will be the main focus over the next two weeks, there is a simultaneous cultural and educational programme to teach the athletes from the 204 participating countries about Olympic values and global issues.
" We open a new chapter in the history of the Olympic Movement. From this moment on, young people from around the world have a chance to participate in a global event that combines sport, education and culture," IOC president Jacques Rogge said. “To win, you merely have to cross the finish line," he said.
"To be a champion, you have to inspire admiration for your character, as well as for your physical talent."
The Games were officially opened by Singapore president S R Nathan who said: "Throughout this programme, our young Olympians will take part in activities and discussions on global and social issues as well as learn how they can make a positive impact in their community."
The show was tailored for the age group it was addressing and its messages ranged from fairness in competition to combating hunger and disease and promoting world peace. It also included 54 teen-oriented multimedia videos specifically produced for the opening ceremony.
"This is an excellent opportunity for our young athletes to participate in these Games” said IOC member and President of the St. Lucia Olympic Committee, Richard Peterkin. "Tonight’s ceremony really focused on the athletes, it was very dynamic and highlighted the challenges that all young athletes face in trying to achieve their goals.”
The opening ceremony marked the first time Olympic athletes were brought into the event early and did not march behind the flags of their country. Instead, they entered from both sides of the stage of the Marina Bay venue while spectators rose to their feet, clapping and cheering them. Included in the procession of competitors were the five young athletes from St. Lucia, Boxer Lyndell Marcellin, Runner Rosen Daniel, Sailor Stephanie Lovell and Swimmers Julien Brice and Siona Huxley, accompanied by their coaches and head of delegation, Olympian Jamie Peterkin.
The athletes’ entrance was followed by a thunderous display of drumming, accompanied by myriad dancers of all ages. At one point, a menacing monster that represented the inner fears and struggles of everyone in attendance cast an imposing shadow over the event.
More than 5,000 performers, including children from 47 Singapore schools, were involved in the ceremony.
Throughout the show, fireworks lit the sky. More than 2,000 were used and they were synchronised to the music and shot from the crowns of various buildings around Marina Bay. The result was a spectacular occasion from beginning to end.
In the latter part of the ceremony, the flags of all 204 participating nations were brought onto the stage by representative athletes, and swimmer Siona Huxley, the sole local qualifier for the Youth Olympics, proudly carried the St. Lucia flag on stage.
Sailor Darren Choy, Singapore's 2010 Sports Boy of the Year, was given the honour of lighting the Youth Olympic flame. Choy competes in the boys' one-person dinghy event and the 32-metre high cauldron he ignited resembled a lighthouse to symbolise a guiding light that welcomes people to a safe harbour.
Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Games, reminded the young athletes that winning was not everything. In a video address, he said: “Do your best but above all, have fun."

If you know of others tell them to contact me directly on my cell 716-0737.

Welcome to all Sharks.
I would very much like to have feedback on this new venture.
In particular, how you would like to see it grow as a way to communicate within the club.
At the moment I have set it up so that Jamie, Tom & John can make posts, along with myself. Would you, for instance, like to get an e-mail each time a post is made? At the moment the blog is open to the world. It could however be only viewed by club members, would this be better or worse? Do you think others, say team captains should be able to post?
More soon. All the best
